Death & Rituals
Death in Caldera
Upon arrival, the Tavernkeeper warned that the natural laws of death in Caldera do not apply to Visitors. Moments after death, their bodies will vanish, leaving behind only the faction gem they currently hold. After three days they will be revived* in their main city's healing quarters and their gem returned upon revival regardless of who might hold it. Alternatively, if other Visitors wish to speed up the process, there is a ritual that can be performed to do so.
For those that experience death, nothing is remembered. When they wake up, it was the memories up to the time their heart stopped beating. It does not matter how long they were dead or whether or not a ritual was performed; whatever Death is, it is not showing itself to the Visitors so easily.
The Tavernkeeper also warned that *those who commit acts that do not align with the values of Caldera will not be granted rebirth as others might; the Leaders will not invest in those that do not give them ample reason to do so.
Criminal atrocities are frowned upon and the Leaders will not bring someone back from death if they are known to make problems without good reason. However, making oneself useful to one or more of the Leaders might give them a bit more motivation to make an exception for you, bringing you back despite your transgressions. In such cases where the Leaders refuse to revive you, even the Ritual will not be enough to bring you back (this will result in a permanent death and the character must be dropped from the game).
Revival Ritual (cw: blood sacrifice)
After collecting the gem held by the deceased character, two or more characters must venture to the local shrine corresponding with the deceased character's faction. They will be escorted by the priests there to a secluded chamber with a stone table engraved with deep rivulets in the shape of odd, indecipherable runes. The gem must be placed in the center and each character must then sacrifice a small portion of blood into the rivulets until the rune lights up with the appropriate faction color. The deceased character's gem will then vanish, along with the blood, and they will be revived in the local healer's quarters two days sooner than they would without intervention.
Resurrection spells outside of this do not work and may even have odd consequences. It is not recommended trying, especially within the confines of the sacrificial shrine.
